I. Orthodoxy 101: A Class for Everyone
When: Alternating Saturdays from 3:30-4:30pm (bi-monthly) in St George Fellowship Hall (beginning Sat Sep 14)
What: A course exploring the fundamental doctrines and aspects of Orthodox faith and life. This course will focus on theology, the sacramental life, Church tradition, and spiritual wisdom, with plenty of time for questions. Inquirers and catechumens hoping to be received into the Orthodox Church need to have actively attended this class for at least one year. All are welcome.
Required Texts (available in the St George bookstore or online at the link below)
1. Eugenia Constantinou, Thinking Orthodox: Understanding and Acquiring the Orthodox Christian Mind (ISBN: 978-1-944967-70-3
II. Weekly Bible Study
When: 9:30-10:30am on Thursdays (weekly) in St George conference room/library.
What: The Gospel of Luke. This Gospel was written by St Luke the Evangelist, who was a physician by trade, with a Gentile audience in mind. Luke emphasizes the social dimension of Jesus’ teachings. We learn in this Gospel that Christian life is a challenging yet transformative journey into the mystery of God’s love for the world, and for us.
III. Evening Theology & Spirituality Book Group
When: 7:00pm on Wednesdays (weekly) after Daily Vespers in St George Fellowship Hall (Sep 4-Nov 13)
What: We will read through Welcoming Gifts: Sacrifice in the Bible and Christian Life, by Fr Jeremy Davis (our new archepiscopal vicar). The book is also available in our parish bookstore. This comprehensive but readable exploration of the concept and reality of ‘sacrifice’ will be enriching and engaging. Sacrifice is much misunderstood in modern culture, often begging the question: “why?” Fr Jeremy reveals the Old Testament background, the significance of Christ’s death as a sacrifice and the Eucharist as a mystical participation in it, and the role of sacrifice in our life as Orthodox Christians. Fr Jeremy will be giving our Fall Parish retreat on Saturday November 16 with the topic: “Welcoming Gifts: Engaging the Sacrifice at the Heart of the Liturgy.”
If interested in any of the above classes, please email Fr Anthony at franthonygilbert@gmail.com to RSVP and to receive additional schedule details.
